America had been our big idea for several years.
Spending a week in New York or Los Angeles alone was never going to satisfy us. We wanted skyscrapers and Brooklyn, California, the ocean, American roads and, above all, the national parks.

The road, day by day
- Days 1–3New York
Manhattan, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, a walk through Brooklyn, an observation deck and the city at night. The route was built district by district so we would not lose hours crossing the whole of New York.
- Days 4–6Los Angeles
Flight to the west coast and picking up the car. Hollywood → Griffith Observatory → Santa Monica → Venice Beach. From Easytravel we got not only the route but parking, neighbourhoods, restaurants and practical stops along the way.
- Days 7–9Las Vegas
Driving across the desert. Two nights in Vegas, the Strip, a show and a short break before the main part of the road trip.
- Days 10–12Grand Canyon and Monument Valley
Sunset at the Grand Canyon, a night beside the national park and on through the American Southwest.
- Days 13–15Yosemite
After the desert came mountains, forests and waterfalls. Easytravel left two days fairly open and prepared several routes of different difficulty so we could choose by the weather.
- Days 16–18San Francisco
The Golden Gate, the waterfront, the cable cars and the neighbourhoods of San Francisco. Here the car goes back and the last days are on foot.
When the route started to break
- 16:20Weather forces a change to an internal flight
- 16:31The manager checks the alternatives
- 16:44A new flight is found
- 16:51Car pick-up is moved
- 17:03The hotel is warned about the late arrival
“They wrote to us: “There are two options. The first is faster, the second more comfortable. We recommend the second. Shall we confirm?” We said yes. That was the end of our involvement”
